English for Speakers of Other Languages
Literacy Volunteers serves adult learners from countries across the globe. ESOL programs are offered statewide through a network of six affiliates.
Every learner receives a free literacy assessment by a trained specialist. From "survival" English to improving comprehension and fluency, tutors are trained to provide appropriate level language instruction. The Literacy Volunteers approach emphasizes using all language components-listening, speaking, reading and writing-to teach and reinforce learning.
Tutors and their ESOL students work on practical application of English language skills, using real-life materials in their lessons. Each tutor and student will meet at a library or other location in the community on a weekly basis to work on improving English language skills. Depending on the student's needs, a tutor may focus on basic vocabulary, conversational skills, verbs and sentence structure, fluency or pronunciation. Some students work on English skills while also studying for their Citizenship test. The tutor and student work together to build a "portfolio" of accomplishments that track successes and highlight the student's work.
Our ESOL program also provides opportunities for learners to participate in small conversation groups, to practice their speaking and comprehension skills in a safe, comfortable environment.
