Program Volunteers
Every Literacy Volunteers organization depends on Program Volunteers to accomplish important tasks and activities.
Tutor Trainers
If you would enjoy working in an informal training setting, helping others to become qualified tutors, this is the role for you! Tutor Trainers conduct 15 to 18 hour workshops, usually over the course of five to six evening classes, to teach adult learning techniques to our volunteer tutors.
- You can become a tutor trainer by completing our 18-hour tutor training program, and participating in a 2 day specialized program to learn adult training techniques;
- Your background in training or teaching may qualify you to get started even sooner;
- You can volunteer to participate in just one workshop per year, or as many as four or five, depending on your interest and availability.
Assessment Specialists
This is a very flexible volunteer assignment, and is an enjoyable way to get to know adult learners in our programs.
- To get started, we'll train you in use of assessments, and you'll have an opportunity to join a trained Assessment Specialist to get hands-on experience;
- You will conduct one-on-one assessments of adult learners, usually lasting about an hour, as they enter or upon leaving our program. You will be writing up one to two page reports for each student you meet;
- You will coordinate meetings with new learners at branches of local libraries, and assess them using standardized assessment tools;
- You can volunteer to conduct a specific number of assessments over the course of a year, or volunteer based on your availability. We'll work with you to set up a schedule that's flexible and convenient for you.
