Tutors
You Can Make a Difference!
To become a tutor, you don't need any special skills in teaching, grammar or language. All you need is the ability to read and write, and the desire to help someone learn.
You can be a tutor at a place and time that's convenient to you, anywhere around the state. Literacy Volunteers has six locations where local coordinators manage literacy programs.
As a volunteer tutor, you will:
- Attend an interactive training program to learn about tutoring techniques. Programs generally run from 15 to 18 hours and are offered during the year at various times including days, evenings and on Saturday.
- Be matched with an adult learner. You can choose to work with someone who is learning English as a second language, or someone who needs help with reading and writing.
- Determine a convenient time and location to meet for one to two hours per week. Libraries, bookstores or community centers are usually good meeting places.
- Receive ongoing support and assistance from your local Literacy Volunteers affiliate.
Tutors are asked to make a commitment to work with their adult learners for 50 hours per year.
Volunteer tutors are rewarded with new friends, new experiences, and the satisfaction that you are making a difference in a person's life and in your community.
